My young friend Kristi’s post on suggestions for using Facebook has prompted me to share a few quick observations that I’ve been thinking about lately.
Last week when in Myrtle Beach, my husband and I saw a few young men walking around with their undies showing. They had on either jeans or shorts, but these articles of clothing were so low that even the casual observer could see the boxers. Incidentally, these were color coordinated to complement the outerwear. Although it drives my husband CRAZY to see such attire, I’m sort of indifferent to it. Maybe it’s because I see it so often.
One day after listening to yet another comment on seeing someone’s boxers, I said something like, “Well, at least he’s covered up.”
“But it looks indecent! Underwear should be just that—underwear,” he replied.
“What’s so different about the hundreds of girls you’ve seen this morning? They looked like they were wearing their bras and panties, and you didn’t seem to mind that,” I said.
“That’s different,” he said.
“Why? Because they’re girls?” I asked.
“No, because they’re wearing bathing suits. These guys are wearing clothes,” he said (a bit dramatically, I might add).
I just couldn’t let it go, so I said, “Let me get this straight. It’s a-okay with you for a girl to walk around with two narrow strips around her body, but it’s not okay for a guy to walk around with his underwear showing above his shorts?”
“Correct,” he answered. “It’s just wrong!”
So that’s the question, Folks. Why is it that females (at least in my neck of the woods) can walk around in an extremely scantily clad fashion but men cannot? By the way, after our conversation, I began an earnest scientific (yeah, right) observation of beach attire, and during the two hours that I people watched, I saw two men wearing short and somewhat tight bathing trunks. The other men wore long, loose ones. Was I at the wrong beach on the wrong day?
Here’s what I think. In our society, women are still perceived as sex objects, and as such, they are much more likely than males to wear more revealing, form fitting clothes. We say, “Look at us!” Men say, “Here I am.” Why is that?
I’m not suggesting that you put your string bikini away. If you’ve got it flaunt it. I’m just saying that men who show their underwear above their shorts are still more covered up and that their attire is much less suggestive. It looks kind of funny, but it doesn’t say, “Come hither.”
What’s your thinking on this? Why do women let it all hang out while men wear looser, longer, less revealing clothing?
hmmm…I guess it is a case of what is appropriate on the beach versus what is appropriate at school, church, on the job. The underwear thing drives me nuts b/c it looks ridiculous and usually the pants are so low that often the entire buttocks is outside of the clothing and you plainly see
butt through thin boxers. Most guys I know are not comfortable in tight swimwear unless they are body builders. I guess it is all perspective…there are countries where it is acceptable to go topless.
Maybe I am missing the point. I’d rather see a bikini than boxers hanging out everywhere.
I see what you're saying, and I agree about the context and the perspective and all that. Last week I was just kind of "over it" with the negative comments about the guys juxtaposed to the ogling over the girls. It was then that I began to notice that the men's suits didn't show derriere (hope I spelled that right) cheeks or a few inches of skin below the belly button.
I think that young girls must find those revealed underwear attractive. The male strutting his tail feathers? Women of a certain age, like moi, think they look funny – especially if they suddenly have to run and thereby have to hang on to their jeans for dear life. I wonder what older men would say if a girl came down the beach in a real bra and panties? It makes me laugh to picture it!
I think they look funny too. It’s just that I’ve grown sort of accustomed to it. Right now I’m thinking of a young man who strolled into an early morning class wearing red satin boxers on a regular basis. The strolling was a constant, but the color, design, and fabric of the boxers varied from day to day.
While I must agree that women are still very much over-sexed in our society, I have to share a funny traumatic experience I had at a church youth swim party. I was probably 12 or 13, and one of the very heavyset youth leaders busted out in a Speedo. I had never seen any guy in anything except swimming trunks (not counting the athletes on TV) I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head.
I love thinking about this, Anita!!! I can just picture your expression when he walked out...busted out.
Technically there is no difference other than the name bikini & panties n bra…they both generally reveal the very exact things on the body.We as humans have become desensitized to the things of this world from the begining of the foundation after the fall of satan,he began to deceive mankind for we are in the (IMAGE) of GOD.Satan has perverted everything good that it will bring shame dishonor and sin to our heavenly father through us.We must all agree, sometimes even without notice, the minute we see a person(s) revealing flesh especially as much as bikinis/panties n bras or speedos/boxers under garment would show, we began to think something sexual, why because our minds have been perverted through fornication, pornagraphy, strip clubs and every thing thereof it’s so bad that a man cant even lQQk at another women or man (for that matter) without thinking something sexual. When people dress in such it opens doors for temptation, lust, wrongful and unlawful sex, divorce, rape, molestion.Nothing good comes out of it so why allow ur self to be put in a postion to be tempted.Matthew 5:27~28 states…(27) Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:(28) But I say unto you,That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. So the bible is fore warning us, because GOD already knew that satan would try to temp us by the lust of the flesh and of the lust eye of what we see.So dont kid urself it’s deeper than we can fathom, yet very clear. The bible states in Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. So if ur trying to live right with christ and be a good wife husband or soon to be…think first so what if everyone else goes my family and eye are going to only do private beaches to limit explicity and even then if exposed we will literally vacate. We dont have to allow ourselves to get caught in such things.Make beteer choices even if it cost ur fun and just remember it cost jesus his life.
